Overview

Cat Ba is the largest island in the Cat Ba Archipelago, a group of roughly 360 islands off the coast of Hai Phong in northern Vietnam. The island lies within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (2004), and since 2023 the archipelago has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago.

It is known for dramatic karst scenery, small beaches, caves and forest trails, and it is home to the Cat Ba langur, one of the world’s rarest primates.

Compared with a Ha Long Bay cruise, Cat Ba is more relaxed and easier to do independently: you sleep on land, rent a scooter, and choose your own mix of hiking, kayaking and beach time.

How to Get There

From Hanoi (about 130–150 km, roughly 3–3.5 hours door to door), the main options are:

• Direct bus or limousine with a speedboat or cable-car crossing (the simplest option; hotel pickup in the Old Quarter is common)
• Train or bus to Hai Phong, then a boat from Ben Binh pier to Cat Ba Town
• Private car via the expressway to Dong Bai pier in Cat Hai, then ferry, speedboat or cable car

The ferry now leaves from Dong Bai (not the old Got pier). The Cat Hai–Phu Long cable car takes about 10–15 minutes, but check its hours, as the last ride is mid-afternoon. After crossing, it is about 30–40 minutes by road to Cat Ba Town.

From Hai Phong city, a fast boat runs from Ben Binh pier to Cat Ba Town. Travel time varies by operator and season (about 45–90 minutes), so check the current timetable.

From Ha Long, take the Tuan Chau–Gia Luan ferry (about 45–60 minutes, with limited daytime departures, fewer in winter), then allow 30–40 minutes by road to Cat Ba Town.

Getting Around Cat Ba

Once on the island, you have several options:

• Motorbike rental (the most popular choice, about 150,000–200,000 VND per day; you need a valid licence and insurance)
• Taxis and motorbike taxis (agree the price before you ride)
• Electric carts between Cat Ba Town and the Cat Co beaches
• Bicycles and limited local buses
• Boat tours for Lan Ha Bay and floating villages

👉 A scooter gives the most freedom, but the roads are hilly and winding. If you are not an experienced rider, take a taxi or join a tour instead. Riding without a valid licence can void your travel insurance.

Cat Ba’s cuisine centers on fresh seafood.

• June–August: hot and humid and best for swimming, but the busiest time (mostly Vietnamese holidaymakers), with sudden heavy showers and storms from July
• September–November: many travelers’ favorite, with warm seas, clearer skies and fewer crowds (still check storm forecasts in September)
• December–February: cool (about 15–20°C) and often grey and misty; too chilly for most swimming, but quiet and good value

Where to Stay

Cat Ba Town (harbor area): The easiest base for first-timers, with restaurants, tour desks and boat departures within walking distance. Expect traffic, some late-night noise and ongoing waterfront construction. Suits budget and mid-range travelers.

Cat Co Beaches: A calmer, resort-style strip a short walk or electric-cart ride from town. Best for swimming, couples and families, though prices are higher and dining choices fewer.

Ben Beo Harbor: Quieter, and close to Lan Ha Bay boat tours, but with limited dining and little nightlife.

Rural Cat Ba and Viet Hai: Homestays and lodges near the national park and villages. Peaceful and authentic, but you will need your own transport or a boat, and facilities are simple.

Lan Ha Bay: Floating homestays and overnight cruises offer quiet nights and sunrise views, but expect basic bathrooms, weak Wi-Fi and possible motion sickness.
